DIXON FINISHES 8TH FRIDAY AS QUALIFYING BEGINS AT BRAINERD

BRAINERD, Minn. Calif. (Aug. 12, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon raced his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 8 qualifying spot Friday at Brainerd International Raceway (B.I.R.) after driving his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned dragster to two consistent passes to begin qualifying.

The 37-time winner opened qualifying in the Land of 10,000 Lakes by powering his Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite/Ameriquest rail to the fastest pass of Friday's first qualifying session by recording a run of 4.639 seconds at 320.66 mph, placing Dixon second in the Top Fuel order. On Friday's second attempt, Dixon bettered his first effort by stopping the B.I.R. timers in 4.624 at 317.05.

"It was on a good run, but it dropped a hole and moved towards the center line," Dixon said. "The 4.62 is ok, we'll take it. We always seem to run better on Saturday, so we've got something to look forward to."

Dixon aims to grab his fourth No. 1 qualifying award of the season when Top Fuel qualifying continues on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. (CT). Dixon is a two-time winner (1999, 2001) of the Brainerd event.
