TOLIVER GOES FOR MAJOR PUSH IN BRAINERD TO QUALIFY FOR COUNTDOWN
TEMECULA, Calif. (Aug. 4, 2008) -- Jerry Toliver and the Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge R/T Funny Car team look to make a major push over the next three NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events to make it into the top 10 in points in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, set to begin following the prestigious U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend. Toliver currently sits in 15th position, 131 points out of the top 10, as he and the team aim to put together a great race at this weekend's 27th annual NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn.
It's a tough challenge for Toliver, as he will need to win a good number of the 12 remaining rounds of competition in these upcoming three races (20 points per round win) to have a chance at making it into the Countdown. "We turned the corner in terms of performance several races ago," he said. "The Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge is running better and qualifying better and we're starting to go rounds. This Countdown for the top 10 is closing in. Basically, we've got to make up like seven rounds on the No. 10 guy, my teammate Jack Beckman, in order to get in there. So it's do or die. It's time to either get it on or not make the top 10, and that would be bad.
"I look at the situation and I approach it professionally," added Toliver, who has five career national-event victories in 10 final rounds to his credit. "I give it 110 percent on every lap. I never slack off. Therefore, the pressure is really on how the Rockstar Energy Drink car performs and what we do out there on the race track. The pressure is also on yourself as a driver. You don't want to screw up, but all you can do is go with what you've got and do the best job you can possibly do and the cards will fall where they're going to fall. It's unfortunate we got ourselves into this position, but we're here and it's not done yet. It's not over until the fat lady sings and she hasn't sung yet.
"We're going into Brainerd with our eyes wide open with the attitude that if we can have a couple of good races we'll be good to go. Brainerd is a lot of fun, especially their campground, 'the zoo.' It's legendary. Brainerd has always been a good stop, good fans, a good facility, and everyone enjoys going there."
