REICHERT, FOUR OTHERS WIN NHRA EVENT ON GOODYEARS
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13. 2006) -- Bill Reichert saved his best pass of the weekend for the round that meant the most as he won the Top Alcohol Dragster class in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Speedway. Reichert was one of five drivers to win on Goodyear tires, best among tiremakers competing in the event.
The other Goodyear-shod winners included Peter Biondo (Stock Eliminator), Brandon Bernstein (Top Fuel), Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car) and David Connolly (Pro Stock).
Reichert defeated Arthur Gallant in the TAD final. Reichert's quick reaction time, .093 of a second, began a 5.244-second, 275.00 mph pass. Goodyear has won eight times the TAD class in NHRA national events this season. That total leads the tire industry by a comfortable margin.
Biondo's victory in Stock Eliminator was largely due to his excellent reaction time (.024 of a second). His official margin of victory, .0152 of a second was estimated at about three feet.
Bernstein's Top Fuel victory came at the expense of Tony Schumacher and, as a result, the race for the championship got closer. Bernstein is now fourth in the standings, behind the second-place tie Schumacher and teammate Melanie Troxel. Everyone is chasing Doug Kalitta.
Johnson's victory was his second of the season and the eighth of his career. He made his best pass of the weekend (4.741 seconds/321.73 mph) in the final, when he beat Gary Scelzi. Ron Capps, the leader in the championship chase, went out in the first round and John Force, who is second in the standings, went out in the second round.
Connolly's victory over Jason Line in the Pro Stock final was not enough to knock Line from the top spot.
