DENSHAM WILL FACE FORMER TEAMMATE
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2005) -- Gary Densham will be facing his old teammate Sunday morning when the Funny Car teams line up for the final eliminations of the 24th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. Densham drove his Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 14 spot with a 4.885 seconds at 316.82 mph. His reward? Densham will face John Force in the first round. Densham spent four years as a Force Racing driver and has been racing against Force for most of his 30 years in the sport.
"I hate to race John but at least one of us will finally break through and earn a first round win tomorrow," Densham said. "I've lost in the first round three consecutive races and his opening round losing streak is at four races. It's just a real tough category and I hope this Racebricks team ends our poor streak." Densham said he was pleased with the performance especially since the car was in good shape after each run. "We have been making fewer mistakes and we're learning how to control the engine," Densham said. "We couldn't make it run in the 4.70s like we would have liked, but we made progress nonetheless."
"This has been a tough season so far because we have high expectations about what this team is capable of doing. We'll get there, but it's just taking a little longer than we wanted. The great thing is that we're still learning and we're still getting better."
Final eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday. ESPN2 will air all the racing this weekend. Qualifying can be seen at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday while the eliminations can be seen at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day will start at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
