Records Fall in First Day of Qualifying

BRAINERD, Minn. - SUMMIT FastNews -- Bob Vandergriff, John Force, Warren Johnson, and Angelle Seeling led their respective fields Friday after the first round of qualifying at the 18th annual Colonel's Truck Accessories NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. The race is the 15th of 22 events in the $40 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. Vandergriff, from Alpharetta, Ga., covered the quarter-mile in 4.597 seconds at 311.77 mph in his Top Fuel dragster, which was fast enough to lead the pack. Vandergriff was low qualifier at the previous event in Sonoma, Calif., and was runner-up at the non-points event, Winston Showdown in Bristol, Tenn., but has yet to score a win on the NHRA tour. Current Top Fuel points leader Mike Dunn is qualified second behind Vandergriff, followed by Larry Dixon and Cory McClenathan. Joe Amato, who has scored more wins (4) than any other dragster driver this year, is currently in the final qualified spot after suffering problems during both qualifying sessions today. Eight-time NHRA Winston champion John Force, from Yorba Linda, Calif., had the quickest Funny Car pass of the day of 4.900 at 312.28 to set the mark in his category. After scoring seven wins on the '99 tour, Force leads the series points battle by 256 points, the largest margin in the professional categories. Whit Bazemore drove his Chevy Camaro to the #2 qualified spot despite the fact that his run was made during a brief rain shower this afternoon. Jerry Toliver, Dean Skuza, and Tommy Johnson Jr round out the top five in Funny Car. Defending NHRA Winston Pro Stock champion Warren Johnson, from Buford, Ga., earned the number one qualifying position in his Pontiac Firebird with a pass of 6.955 at 197.59, shattering both ends of the track record. His son Kurt is in the second slot, followed by Jeg Coughlin, Mark Pawuk, and Bruce Allen who was qualified next-to-last until the final session of the day. Seeling, from New Orleans, made a pass of 7.356 at 182.82 to hold on to the number one spot after the first day of qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Defending series champ Matt Hines is second, followed by John Smith, Antron Brown, and Craig Treble. Qualifying continues tomorrow in the professional categories, while sportsman eliminations continue. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday.
