HERBERT AIMS TO WIN ROUNDS AND GAIN POINTS
Brainerd, Minn. (August 8, 2007) The Countdown to the Championship points system will have the elite eight in points battling for the Top Fuel Championship after the first 17 races of the season. With 15 of them in the record books, Doug Herbert, driver of the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster, knows exactly what needs to be done.
Following a successful weekend in Sonoma, Calif., where he posted his first No. 1 qualifying effort of the season and advanced to the semifinal round, Herbert leaped to the No. 10 position in points, a meager 53 points outside the all important No. 8 position.
Two races remain until the field is narrowed to the top eight, and Herbert plans on taking full advantage of each opportunity.
"We are only about three rounds out of the No. 8 position," said Herbert. "We had a solid weekend in Sonoma, and that put us up to No. 10. Two more race weekends like that and we will solidly be in the top eight, ready to race for the Championship."
Taking place in Brainerd, Minn., this weekend's 26th annual Lucas Oil Nationals will be a hotly contested race, as several other drivers try to race their way into the elite eight.
"Every driver out here has the same goal," said Herbert, "but I feel like we have an advantage. It seems like things are finally starting to go our way. The team is really jazzed, and they are itching to be fighting for the Championship.
"Wes Cerny will be with us again this weekend, consulting with Jim Brissette. They are two very smart men who have this car running like it should. We are consistently making it down the track when others seem to be having trouble.
"Our goal for this weekend is to qualify in the top half of the field, win some rounds, and make another jump in the points. We wouldn't mind winning the whole thing, either!"
