HERBERT TACKLES THE FIRST TWO QUALIFYING SESSIONS IN BRAINERD
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 12, 2005) -- Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools/Doug Herbert Performance Center team came out firing on Friday at the 24th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Herbert drove the Top Fuel dragster to a 4.615-second pass at 317.27 mph during the first of two sessions on Friday -- the low of the session. They smoked the tires on the second pass of the day, something they knew might happen.
"Wayne (Dupuy, crew chief) asked me if I wanted to run a 4.55 or if I wanted us to throw it all out at the track and go for the top qualifying position. I told him no question that I wanted us to go for it. We did and it didn't work out. I think we just overpowered the track but that doesn't mean we didn't learn something."
Still, the team is No. 7 with two sessions remaining Saturday.
"We can run in the 4.50s tomorrow, no problem," Herbert said. "The weather could actually be a lot better. The forecast calls for lower temperatures and we know we are capable of improving on the 4.61. That was like a race day run. The night runs are fun for the fans and can be really exciting, but they are usually more ego than anything else.
"We worked on a race day setup today and that's going to pay off on Sunday. This team gets better and better every weekend. We earned a runner-up finish at the last race and I know we are ahead of the game already this weekend."
Qualifying starts at noon for Top Fuel, continuing at 3 p.m. before final eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
ESPN2 will air all the racing this weekend. Qualifying can be seen at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday while the eliminations can be seen at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day will start at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
