Kalitta wins battle of Dougs this time in second round at Brainerd, Minn.
BRAINERD, Minn., August 18, 2002 - All things considered, Doug Herbert is positive he won the right round of racing in the battle of Top Fuel drivers named Doug Sunday in the Rugged Liner Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Herbert's Snap-on Racing dragster was matched against Doug Kalitta for the second straight NHRA POWERade Series event, only this time Kalitta got the win light and advanced to the semifinals. Two weeks ago at Sonoma, Calif., Herbert edged Kalitta at the finish line to win the Fram/Autolite Nationals, Herbert's first win in 13 months.
"We got beat by the fastest guy in the race," Herbert said of Kalitta, who was the No. 1 qualifier. "If we'd qualified in a better position, we wouldn't have met him in the second round." Herbert started eighth overall.
After defeating Jim Head in the opening round with his quickest run of the weekend, 4.695 seconds at 316.60 mph to a 4.852 at 312.86, Herbert ran 4.701 at 305.91 to Kalitta's 4.634 at 314.90.
"The car has been running good," added Herbert. "I wouldn't have traded last week's win for this one. We beat him at the right time."
The win did enable Kalitta to regain sixth place by 14 points over Herbert, 882-868.
Herbert will be busy this week. He visits Snap-on headquarters in Kenosha, Wis., Tuesday, then goes to Indianapolis on Wednesday for a test session to prepare for the prestigious U.S. Nationals, Aug. 30-Sept. 2.
