BRAINERD, Minn - Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells drove his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" dragster to his first national event victory of the year, and second win at The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway during the Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals this past weekend. Wells defeated No. 1 qualifier Mark Hentges in the finals, taking a .447 to .491 holeshot and staying ahead to take the win, with a 5.512/254.81 to Hentges' right there 5.523/255.82.
Wells' qualified No. 3 with a 5.581/254.90. The LeMars, Iowa based driver then took out the only A/Fuel entry of the race, Calvin Friesen with a low e.t. of the race and career best e.t. 5.476/255.82.
Wells said, "We came here and put basically the same tune-up on the car as we had when we won the points race here [Division 5 FMDRS] earlier in the year. We had some tireshake problems in qualifying, and we found that it was due to the tires being worn out. We put some new Hoosiers on it for the last shot of qualifying, and they stuck so hard it drove through the clutch, and it still ran a .58. We knew we had a good idea what to do then."
Wells then took out Division 5 rival and points leader Billy Bybee in the semifinals. Bybee redlighted away a 5.591/255.15, while Wells ran a 5.604/252.95 to move into the finals.
"It felt good to beat Bybee in the semi's. Those guys are tough. I saw him take off, and thought he had put a huge holeshot on me, and short shifted. I crossed the finish line thinking 'man, he beat me again."
"After short shifting in the semi's, I went into the final looking to cut a good light, and to run it to the shift light. After talking to Tom [Conway], we put the car back pretty close to that .47, and we came away with the win," Wells said of the final.
With this win in their pocket, the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will move on to the Division 5 closer at Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa.
"It would be nice to go back to our home state of Iowa and win one for our fans there."
