BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster pilot David Wells will be looking to win an unprecedented fourth straight victory at the Colonel's Raceway in Brainerd, Minn., during this weekend's Colonel's Truck Accessory Nationals there. The former Division 5 Champion has won ten consecutive rounds of competition there, and is one of the favorites to win there again this weekend in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" entry.
Wells, who helps run the family's ice cream plant in LeMars, Iowa, has had a solid year on the divisional level, with three wins and a runner-up finish, and appears to be on his way to his third Division 5 Crown. On the national side, Wells and his team have struggled, however. Everything and anything from bad luck to parts breakage has limited the team to only one round win in four national events entered thus far. Wells hopes coming back to a track that has been favorable to him will help get him back on track.
"We're just going to go in with our normal strategy," said Wells. "Obviously, we would love to win four in a row in Brainerd. It's kind of our home track, anyway. We always try to win, but this is another feather in our cap we would like to have."
With cooler than normal conditions forecasted, and the expert track preparation of NHRA's Safety Safari, Wells hopes to better the 5.5 second elapsed times that carried his Tom Conway tuned dragster to victory earlier in the year.
"Normally, we can run a little bit quicker at the nationals," explained Wells. "At the divisional, the track is not near as good as it is for the nationals. If I was guessing, I would probably say it will be about a tenth faster. But, then again, you never know. If the weather changes a little bit, or the track gets goofy, for whatever reason, it might slow us down."
The Federal Mogul Dragster will receive two qualifying sessions on Friday, with one more Saturday morning, followed by round one of eliminations. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
