Treble returns to scene of his first NHRA championship.
Brainerd, MN -- Pre Race: For every event on the NHRA POWERade tour, Craig Treble has memories of each track and its history for the Matco Tools Suzuki rider. At The 22nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Aug. 14-17 at Brainerd International Raceway, it is easy for Treble to pick his favorite Brainerd memory, his first NHRA Pro Stock Bike event win.
With the wild-eyed enthusiasm of a rookie, Treble arrived in Brainerd in 1999 with a hope of qualifying, while trying to conquer the steep learning curve in NHRA POWERade racing. When Treble defeated six-time NHRA champion Dave Schultz for his first career victory; he knew he could hang with the big boys. Treble recalls "Brainerd will always be special for me because of that first championship. We had dreamed of competing at this level for a long time, and a win over a guy like Dave Schultz was truly unbelievable. It gave our team the confidence that we could race as professionals successfully."
At last seasons Brainerd event, it was Treble that was the steady veteran beaten in the Pro Stock Bike final by a rider winning his first NHRA title. "Last year Geno Scali was riding the Pete Briggs Kawasaki and collected his first win by beating us in the final, there is a bit of irony in all of that." Said Craig.
The Matco Tools team will be arriving in Brainerd fresh off a No. 1 qualifying effort in Sonoma, where the team recorded a personal best Elapsed Time of 7.062 while re-setting the Infineon Raceway track record for NHRA Pro Stock Bikes. "We went into Sonoma ready to race, so I hope we can continue in Brainerd to set the pace in qualifying and eliminations. They have a new track surface at Brainerd International Raceway this year and from what everyone is saying it that the track is flat, smooth, and fast. Last month Larry "Spiderman" McBride re-set the Top Fuel Motorcycle World Record on that track, and after the run all he could do was rave about the new surface."
Combine his fondness for the racetrack, the revival in performance, and a drive to improve his position in the 2003 NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Bike championship points battle, and Treble is in a position to again claim the Brainerd bike title. "Brainerd is unique that's for sure. I like the place a lot, and our team is having fun again and winning rounds. We have our good Vance & Hines motors all tuned up and ready to go so we expect to fly on the new track.
