FIVE OF SIX CAMARO Z28s ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, defeated Dale Creasy Jr. in the first round, 5.003/299.50 to 5.245/289.20.
WHIT BAZEMORE, TEAM WINSTON CAMARO Z28, eliminated Tom Hoover, 5.145/282.84 to 5.341/251.88.
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, disposed of Tony Pedregon, 5.122/298.11 to 5.272/267.37.
NOTE: Unfortunately, one Camaro will have to go in the second round, as Capps faces Bazemore in the quarterfinals.
KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, defeated Troy Coughlin, 7.067/194.21 to 8.197/124.46.
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, eliminated Mike Thomas, 7.124/192.26 to 7.132/192.84.
TOM HAMMONDS, WINNEBAGO/MAC TOOLS/KENDALL CAMARO Z28, was ousted by Richie Stevens, 7.122/193.46 to 8.265/123.66. Hammonds was ahead of Stevens right from the launch pad until his engine lost power. Hammonds has qualified in three of the six races in which he's competed this year, and has won a total of two rounds.
HAMMONDS: "I had a good holeshot (.460 to .463) on him. I thought I was running pretty good. I had him, he was mine. I didn't see him at all. Then I heard a big pop and the motor started losing power. I clicked it off and figured I'd rather try to save the motor as much as I could until we find out what is wrong. It might be a couple of valve springs. We're going to check it over thoroughly and hope it's nothing major." "This is the best engine I have. It's better than the spare, which is being worked on at Finish Line Racing Engines (Newark, Ohio), so we need to get it fixed before Indy (U.S. Nationals). We should have the spare engine back the end of this week."
(CORRECTION: Press Note from Friday: ON THE ENGINE SITUATION AFTER SEATTLE (where the engine was damaged before final qualifying): "We had to fly the engine from Seattle on Monday in order to have enough time for Finish Line Racing Engines to go through the whole engine to make sure everything was o.k. They had a lot of work, they not only had my engine but a lot of other engines (to work on). I wanted to make sure mine got in there first and got it all taken care of. My spare is getting worked on, this is the race engine, the only one we've got right now. If we break this one I will sell everything I have to get another one. Larry Morgan has offered me one of his motors and from a Chevy guy to a Chevy guy I really appreciate that."
