Mechanical failure sidelines Wilson in semifinals.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - A freak mechanical failure derailed NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Jeff Wilson's hopes of winning this past weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Ky. Wilson and the Associated Builders & Contractors/Starcon team appeared to be on track to win, but had a blower stud failure that caused the engines supercharger to lose seal.

Wilson, from Winfield, Mo., qualified the ABC/Starcon dragster fifth with at 5.687 second elapsed time at 236.88 mph. In round one, he took out Div. 3 title contender Ken Perry with a 5.645 at 254.28 mph. In his semifinal matchup with eventual winner Russ Lindert, a blower stud broke, causing the supercharger to actually lift itself off of the motor, causing the engine to lose power. Wilson had taken the starting line advantage, but Lindert went by for the win with a 5.714 at 251.44 mph.

"It was just a wierd deal this weekend," said Wilson. "By raceday, I think we had a pretty good tuneup. We actually had a rear blower stud break off, and with the amount of torsion the front belt puts on the blower, it just caused it to blow the blower off of it once it broke back there. It didn't even knock the burst panels out. Kind of a weird deal, and I think we had a good chance at beating Lindert, because we had our best 60' of the weekend in that round, .03 better than the .64 we had run the round before, so it probably would have ran at least a low .60, high .50. I guess that's drag racing."

Wilson and the ABC/Starcon team will head straight to their next event, the biggest in all of drag racing, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park this weekend.
