Beckman not daunted by early loss at Las Vegas

MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors Dodges up to No. 8

LAS VEGAS (April 7, 2013) - Jack Beckman fully endorsed the NHRA Countdown to the Championship system last year. One reason is he won the Funny Car world championship so he probably would have liked any system NHRA used to determine the No. 1 team provided the result was the same.

The way the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is shaping up after four national events, he might have added adulation for the Countdown that resets points for the top 10 drivers after the first 18 of 24 events.

This season hasn't started like the last one ended, although Beckman moved up one spot in points to ninth.

"Believe me, all of us on this MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors/Valvoline team are aware of where we are relative to our potential and it's a long season," he said. "We'll be there at the end, I'm sure of that and that's what keeps me confident."

Beckman's Dodge Charger R/T lost in the opening round of the first two events then advanced to the semifinals three weeks ago before taking a step back Sunday with a second-round loss in the NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Beckman's Dodge quickly lost traction early and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Matt Hagan coasted into the semifinals.

"We're back to baby steps," Beckman said of progress being made by crew chief Todd Smith and assistant Terry Snyder.

"We are really trying to make a better racecar. We've lost the consistency on this car that we had last year.

"We're trying to find the handle on it and get it to go down the racetrack three runs in a row and that's been a big challenge this year. It wasn't for us last year. In fact, it was the hallmark of our championship season. This car went down the track nearly every single time.

"It's frustrating when you know you've got the parts, you know you've got the talent on the team and you know what you're capable of and you're not achieving that."
