Johnson Jr. Powers to No. 5 Qualifying Spot at Houston
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) 0x2022 Tommy Johnson Jr. equaled his best qualifying outing of the young 2004 NHRA season at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. The Iowa native drove his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 5 qualifying position after racing to a run of 4.896 seconds at 311.20 mph.
Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew rebounded following a qualifying setback in Las Vegas two weeks ago, making four, clean runs down the H.R.P. drag strip. Johnson drove his Skoal Racing flopper to runs of 4.969 at 301.33 and 4.933 at 304.46 on Saturday.
"I like our chances on Sunday," Johnson said. "Talk about a rebound. We were pretty dejected at Vegas and as a group we all made sure that wouldn't happen again. We did a great job of making the right changes. To go from not qualifying to making four straight runs down the drag strip and end up fifth is very satisfying."
Johnson, who posted a runner-up finish to John Force two years ago at Houston Raceway Park, will battle the 12-time NHRA champion in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Force qualified 12th.
"If you have lane choice on John Force in the first round, that kind of tells you that you're running pretty well," Johnson said. "When you qualify fifth, you have to race a guy at the bottom of the field and you know you're doing all right. I feel good; I'm ready to race."
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.
