JOHNSON JR. FINISHES QUALIFYING IN NO. 8 POSITION WITH 4.852 AT HOUSTON

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 9, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday at Houston Raceway Park after recording a qualifying-best effort of 4.852 seconds at 317.49 mph.

Johnson's best run of his four qualifying attempts came Friday evening under the lights at Houston Raceway Park when his Chevy flopper stopped the timers in 4.852 seconds at 317.49 mph. Johnson and the Skoal Racing team battled warm temperatures and a hot H.R.P. quarter mile on Saturday afternoon as the Don Prudhomme-owned Funny Car overpowered the race track on both attempts. Johnson's 2.307-second 330-foot time on his final qualifying attempt was his best 330-time since the season-opening Winternationals in February.

"We had our best 330 (foot) time since Pomona on the last qualifying run," Johnson said. "It wanted to run a good number. We fixed the problems that plagued us on Friday, but the track was hotter today. We've got lane choice and that's key here. There's a bump in the right lane. Now, we have to win first round and earn lane choice for the second round."

For the second straight event, Johnson will match up against fellow Chevy driver Jeff Arend in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson has a career mark of 2-1 versus Arend.
