JOHNSON JR. POWERS TO 4.852-SECOND PASS FRIDAY AT HOUSTON

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 8, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to the No. 8 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park after recording a run of 4.852 seconds at 317.49 mph on Friday's second qualifying attempt.

Johnson, who opened the 2005 NHRA campaign with a victory at the Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., began qualifying with a performance of 4.991 at 301.47 on a hot Houston Raceway Park quarter mile. Johnson and the Mike Green-led race crew capped off the first day of qualifying with the 4.852 at 317.49 pass to finish eighth with two qualifying sessions remaining. There are 19 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car field this weekend at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals.

"We got down the track both times on Friday," Johnson said. "We improved on the second pass and we're in the top half of the field and that's the goal. We're not up to speed to where we'd like to be, but we're not that far off. It's going to be warm on Saturday, but I think we can run better than 4.85."

The Iowa native aims to improve upon the 4.852-second effort when qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) Saturday in the Lone Star State.
