Team Hammonds CHASES A win and adocates student achievement in houston
(HOLT, Fla., Mar. 24, 2008) --Team Hammonds will focus on two fronts for the upcoming 21st Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston. They will be chasing a win and kicking-off national achievement program Tom Hammonds Race for Achievement at The Imani School.
Coming off of a DNQ at the Gatornationals, Team Hammonds is looking for a better result in Houston. Still battling problems with the Chevy Cobalt, the team tested in Gainesville receiving good outcomes.
"After testing, we know we still possess the horsepower to be very competitive," says Tom Hammonds, Team Hammonds driver/owner, "now, we need to harness the horsepower to give us total good runs, not good runs only in the back half."
Last season weather presented problems with the condition of track in Houston, but it did not hinder Team Hammonds from qualifying 12th in the field making it to elimination Sunday. Houston's track is notoriously known as a fast track, and Team Hammonds, this season, has consistently registered fast times ranking in the top 10 among drivers. Having the proper set-ups, good weather, and staying on top of any mechanical issues, Team Hammonds is sure to hold a spot in the qualifying field for Sunday's competition.
"DNQ's are not an option for us, but we are early enough in the season to harness the problems we have with the Chevy Cobalt to be in the running for the title at the end of the season. In Houston, we are shooting for a win and are also excited to kick off our school program."
Team Hammonds will also kick off their national student achievement program, Tom Hammonds Race for Achievement, on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at 2:00 p.m. CST. Hammonds will interact with students through message. Students will participate in an assembly where he will speak about the importance of education, sportsmanship, and leadership. Students will also get a chance to view the NHRA Pro Stock Chevrolet Cobalt and team transporter.
During the assembly, Hammonds and The Imani School will be presented with a proclamation declaring it Tom Hammonds Race for Achievement Day in the city of Houston. Fifty students meeting set criteria will be chosen to receive an O'Reilly Auto Parts® Race Pack, filled with goodies supplied by program supporters (GM, Goodyear, and MacTools®) and Tom Hammonds, two tickets to Friday's race, and one student out of the 50 will be chosen to serve as an honorary crew member at the race.
