Howard looking forward to return in Houston.
BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard will return to competition during this weekend's O'Reilly Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park. Howard has taken a brief break waiting for her husband Paul, who suffered from cardiac difficulty at the Mac Tools Gatornationals, recover.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., is excited about getting back out on the track with her husband by her side, but is also saddened by the recent death of former crewmember Rick Meyer. Meyer worked for the team for the past two seasons, and passed away from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Howard and her team hope to do well this weekend in memory of their close friend.
"It's been a really tough deal for all of us," said Howard. "Rick was like family to us; we spent a lot of time on the road together. He will be sorely missed, and we send our deepest sympathies to the Meyer family. We're happy to be back, and Paul is doing great, in fact he performed his first surgery last week since the accident. But, with the news of Rick's passing, it kind of takes the wind out of you. Rick would have wanted us to be happy and go race, so that's what we're doing."
Howard won the Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event held here in February, and hopes to have similar fortunes this weekend.
"This weekend will be tough," commented Howard. "There's going to be a lot of good cars out here. We're just going to stick to our gameplan, take it one run at a time and see what happens."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning.
