BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) -- For the second consecutive race, Ron Capps qualified his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo in the top half of the Funny Car field. Capps powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Chevy to the No. 8 qualifying position with a run of 4.912 seconds at 312.71 mph.

On Saturday, Capps drove his John Stewart-tuned flopper to a run of 5.030 at 298.73 on his first qualifying attempt, then lost traction on his final qualifying effort and slowed to a run of 9.191 at 93.31. Capps' speed of 312.71 mph was the top speed of the Funny Car category during qualifying.

"The car is running pretty good and we qualified in the top half of the field which is important," Capps said. "We've got last year's champion in the first round. The conditions are going to be pretty close to what they were on Saturday. You're not going to see very many 4.80s. It's going to come down to which crew chief calls the smartest race and the driver needs to be on his game because the track is going to be slick.

"The track is tricky because it's still a little green from the resurfacing. There are a few bumps in one lane. You need to really concentrate, as a driver, to keep the car in the center of the track, that's the key."

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, will face defending NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon, who qualified ninth, in the first round of Funny Car eliminations.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.
