Capps Powers to No. 6 Spot at Houston on Friday
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2004) 0x2022 Ron Capps powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 6 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park after clocking a performance of 4.912 seconds at 312.71 mph on his second qualifying effort.
Capps opened qualifying with a run of 8.416 at 102.21 after his Chevy Funny Car lost traction on the newly resurfaced Houston Raceway Park drag strip. On his second of four scheduled qualifying attempts, Capps blasted his Skoal Racing Chevy into the top half of the Funny Car order.
"On the first run, the track was very, very green," Capps said. "It was pretty much everybody smoking the tires. The Safety Safari did a great job of getting the track ready for the evening session, and sure enough, out comes the 4.80s on Friday night.
"We were pretty much at the front of the pack on the second run, so we couldn't really stand on it. We wanted to make a safe run. The guys wanted to run a low 4.90 and that's what the car did. We're in the show, now we can concentrate on our race day setup on Saturday."
Capps look to move up the Funny Car order when qualifying continues Saturday with nitro qualifying sessions at noon and 3 p.m. (CT).
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 17 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.
