Capps Suffers Early Defeat At Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 18, 2004) -- Ron Capps, who qualified his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo in the top half of the Funny Car order for the second consecutive race, suffered a narrow defeat in the first round of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at Houston Raceway Park.

Capps, who qualified eighth, squared off against 2003 NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon in round one. The Skoal Racing driver blasted his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a performance of 4.947 seconds at 306.81 mph. However, Pedregon's Chevy was slightly quicker, recording a run of 4.892 at 296.63 to take the narrow victory.

b^0x001cWe're real disappointed," Capps said. "We were really comfortable with the way the car was running. We knew the track had been tricky and felt we had an advantage with the down force of the Monte Carlo body. We thought lane choice would be a big deal, but it wasn't at all since the weather cooled down on Sunday. We had to run Tony Pedregon and he's the champ and they have a great car. We didn't make any mistakes, but they just ran a little quicker than us."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fourth annual O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals, April 30-May 2, at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn.
