Stivers blasts to top half of the field in Houston
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 9, 2010) - In just his second official pass of the 2010 drag racing season, Rick Stivers drove his Trane 2006 Stratus Pro Mod to the provisional No. 8 qualifying position in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series event at the NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.
Stivers recovered remarkably fast from the unplanned surgery that kept him from competing in the Pro Mod season opener in Gainesville, Fla., proving, he said, that "It's hard to stop a Trane."
"I was a little cautious on the first pass today, and I had some terrible tire shake that rattled me around, but on that second lap, Brad [Anderson, team owner and crew chief] and the whole team got the track figured out and gave me a heck of a ride. I knew from the moment I dropped the clutch that it was going to be a quick run," Stivers said.
Stivers claimed the provisional No. 8 spot with his run of 5.941-seconds at 243.90 m.p.h. with one qualifying attempt remaining to try to improve his standing before eliminations begin Saturday evening. The Kentucky entrepreneur and horse farmer said he is anxious to get another lap down the track before eliminations.
"I know there is a whole lot more in the car, and I was a little rusty driving, so I think we can get up higher tomorrow," he said. Stivers' teammate, Jay Payne - also tuned by Brad Anderson - is sitting at the No. 1 spot with a 5.813-second blast at 246.21 m.p.h.
"Jay showed that Brad can really take advantage of these amazing weather conditions, and if things hold even close tomorrow, I know I'll be right up there with him. I'm feeling really good, and don't have any pain or effects from the surgery at all.
"I have to thank my family again, because it's them that really got me through all of this and got me well so quickly -- Jill, Little Rick and my daughter-in-law Mandy, and my little princess granddaughter, Gabriella. They kept my focus on getting well so I could get to this race," he said.
"Now, I've just got to go out there and win it, because you might be able to slow me for a while, but, it's hard to stop this Trane," Stivers said.
