TROXEL ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 1) -- The Vietnam Veterans POW/MIA Top Fuel dragster driven by Melanie Troxel reached the quarterfinals at the 20th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

She defeated Alan Bradshaw for the fifth time of her career recording an elapsed time of 4.623 seconds, 314.39 mph to his time of 5.668 seconds, 172.47 mph giving her the opportunity to meet J.R. Todd in the quarterfinals.

Things didn't go quite her way in that round as she spun the tires against Todd around 400 feet out on the quarter-mile and was resigned to see him reach the finish line first, but did add more valuable Top Fuel points to her championship column. Todd placed his dragster in the next round of eliminations after tripping the clocks with a time of 4.642 seconds, 314.24 mph to Troxel's time of 6.039 seconds, 201.19 mph.

"I definitely felt early in the weekend we had as good of a shot as anybody to win this race," said Troxel, who was the runner-up in the 2006 Spring Nationals edition. "We had a car that was running very well, but unfortunately when the conditions change like this and you don't have lane choice, it throws things up in the air. We did our best, but didn't come away with the win. I think our No. 2 qualifying spot is the highpoint we're looking for knowing the performance of the car is coming around."

She is presently seventh in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points standings in the Countdown to the Championship chase with 214 markers.

The next event for the Avon, Indiana resident will be the eighth annual running of the Summitracing.com Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on April 12 -- 15.
