HAGAN GRABS NO. 5 IN HOUSTON QUALIFYING

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 10, 2010) - Matt Hagan qualified the DieHard Dodge Charger Funny Car in No. 5 for the 23rd annual NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

His quickest pass of 4.091 seconds at 311.99 mph came in today's third qualifying session, the third quickest of the round. On Friday, he pulled out a 4.179/295.46 for No. 5, then slowed to a 5.015/138.43 Friday evening because of tire shake. In his final attempt today, he posed a tire-smoking 4.635/179.04.

"We were well in the field and we were going for it," he said of his final try, under the lights in cooler conditions. "On the graph out there it looked like it hit a bump in the right lane and unloaded the tires. So, I think we have to be aware of that on race day.

"Everything felt good tonight. I really thought it was going to be on a good run. I've been trying a new helmet this weekend - I've had a smaller helmet on before - and it really blurred my vision a little bit. I went back to my old helmet and I could see everything that was going on, and it felt like everything was lined up real good. We were going for it, and it didn't stick.

"We had kind of a rough weekend. First round we had a hole (cylinder) out and the second round our parachute came out. In the third round we got in the show really well."

Hagan faces Melanie Troxel in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
