Martino's weekend comes to a premature conclusion

Tom Martino and the Jesel Motorsports Grand Am crew knew they had their work cut out for them in qualifying for the O'Reilly Spring Nationals. With over thirty cars vying for one of only sixteen spots in Sunday's field, the race was on to find the combination that would best suit the lightning-fast Houston Raceway Park racing surface.

The weather played a significant role in the Pro Stock contingent's efforts. The doorslammers' normally-aspirated engines are much more sensitive to temperature changes, and as a result, competitors could realistically make attempts quick enough to qualify in only two of the four sessions. Unfortunately, Martino's best effort of 6.880 seconds, which came with a top speed of 200.41 mph fell shy of making the top sixteen by a mere nine thousandths of a second.

"Naturally, the entire team is disappointed by this weekend's results. After qualifying 3rd in Las Vegas, we felt we had a good handle on our Jesel Motorsports Grand Am, and were looking forward to racing in Houston. Unfortunately, we missed the set-up on our first attempt, which put us behind going into the good session.

"To be honest, we never made what I would call a great run all weekend. Even so, we came within a hair of getting into the field. But let's face it, close just isn't good enough.

"The competition in Pro Stock is tougher than it's ever been. Every week, there are a lot of good cars going home early. It's our job in the two weeks before the next race in Bristol to figure out what we can do to make sure it doesn't happen to us again."
