BAYTOWN, Texas -- Today, Mark Whisnant driver of the RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier, failed to qualify at the 15th Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston. Whisnant's best attempt of the weekend came in the third round of qualifying. It was in that round that Whisnant drove his Chevrolet to a 6.882 / 200.95 mph, which placed him in the 22nd position and out of the race.
For many teams and drivers two consecutive DNQ's would be very disheartening, but this RW Performance team is not like all the others.
"Yeah, I'm upset about not qualifying," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga., "but we are not going to give up.
"We knew when we started racing Pro Stock that it wasn't going to be easy. Pro Stock is hands down the most competitive form of drag racing out there. Every weekend I line up against the best of the best. I knew that it was going to be tough and that these guys were not going to give us an inch. We knew all that going in to this.
"I said when we qualified for Gainesville that anything we did after that would be gravy. It seemed too good to be true at the time, and I guess it was.
"When we started racing Pro Stock Truck it was the same way. We knew that there was a learning curve that we would have to go through; it is the same in the Pro Stock car. We knew then that it would take some time for us to get up to speed, but after getting a little taste of what it is like in Gainesville, well I guess our patience went out the window.
"This team is way too competitive to except one DNQ, let alone two. We are determined not to let this happen again, and we know that that means that we are just going to have to work harder.
"Right now we are turning all of our attention to the next race in Bristol. We will stay here Monday and Tuesday to test. Then we will head to the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., and put as many laps on this Cavalier as we need to get ready for Bristol. If we have to spend all week there we will, because this is about racing on Sunday, not going home Saturday night."
The next race on the POWERade Drag Racing schedule will be the Second Annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. April 26 -- 28.
