Ouch! and then there were eight.

RICHFIELD, OH 4/15/02 "I knew it! That press release about having qualified at all of the races jinxed us," joked Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk two days after his Summit Racing Pontiac failed to make the cut at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Houston. "I knew we shouldn't have put that one out. Oh, well, what're ya gonna do? Sometimes things just break that way, I guess."

Despite breaking his string of consecutive national event qualifications that stretched back to last season, Pawuk was optimistic about the future.

"This was the first race this season where we ran our own engine," he said, "and we're pretty pleased at the result even though we didn't qualify. If we had made a perfect run on Friday night I think we would have been in the show. We wouldn't have been in the top half, but we would have made it.

"Knowing where we were with our engine program two weeks ago, and where we are right now, gives us a lot of hope for the future.

"Our engine performed pretty well, but it did drop off on power as qualifying went along, so we've obviously got to figure that out, make the corrections necessary, and go from there.

"I'm confident we can continue to use our own powerplants, and that we'll be right in the middle of the action a couple of weeks from now in Bristol. We're going to do some testing between now and then, and I think we'll be in good shape.

"We're obviously disappointed that we didn't make the show in Houston, but we made real progress, and that bodes well for the rest of the year. But, right now I'm looking just one race down the road, and the Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol."
