Arana takes Pro Stock Motorcycle pole in Houston

HOUSTON (April 10) -- Hector Arana braved rain and changing conditions to hang on to the No. 1 qualifying position in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the 23rd annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Spring Nationals on Saturday at Houston Raceway Park.

Arana had a best pass of 6.856 seconds at 195. 25 mph to secure the the No. 1 qualifying spot. He will face fellow veteran Steve Johnson in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.

"I've got to give a lot of credit to my crew," Arana said. "They are the ones who check the staging lanes hours before we get to run so we can make the proper call on the tuneup.

"They are doing an awesome job of keeping an eye on the track and the weather."

Arana said if the good conditions hold, more big runs might be possible.

"I had some spectacular runs today, so I am really pleased," Arana said. "There plenty of bikes out there capable of running faster than I am running now."

Shawn Langdon guided the Lucas Oil/Speedco dragster to the No. 7 qualifying spot and a first round date with Troy Buff.

Langdon ran a best lap 3.860 seconds at 314.24 mph.

"We made three good runs and in the fourth we were swinging for the fences," Langdon said. "We had a mishap before that fourth run with the fuel pump. The fuel pump shaft broke and we had to change motors.

"It got the guys a little bit rushed on it. We made three good, clean runs and qualified in the top half. We know we have to pick it up a little bit."

Larry Morgan, who has been struggling with engine issues since switching to a Ford in his Lucas Oil Mustang in Pro Stock at the beginning of the season, failed to qualify for the race. His best pass was a 6.600 second run at 210.01 mph, which was 18th best in the standings. A 6.584 was enough to get in the Pro Stock field.
