Gremlins plague Team Marines Olds.

Baytown, Texas -- The usual weather prevailed at Houston Raceway Park for the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals. The usual weather? Hot and Humid.

In Friday's opening qualifying session, the first of four, Larry Nance, from Akron, Ohio, driver of the U. S. Marine Corps Olds Cutlass, shut the car off when he got out of the groove and coasted to a pass of 9.344 seconds.

For the second session on Friday evening, with the sun gone from the track, Nance carved out a run of 6.927 seconds at 198.12 mph, a tad over five hundredth of a second off the bump spot of 6.873 seconds. It turned out that this would be his best run of the weekend.

The team changed engines for Saturday's first session but with the air not as good as Friday night's cooler temperatures, Nance could only click the finish line clocks in 6.942 seconds.

On the final pass, with the temperatures soaring, Nance bettered his morning run but still failed to break into the 16-car field that will compete in tomorrow's elimination. The former NBA slam dunk winner turned drag racer finished in the 27th qualifying position.

Crew chief Taylor Lastor was disappointed in the team's result. He said, "We seem to have a bug in this Marine Corps Olds. It's not making any horsepower. While it continues to make good runs down low, we can't seem to get the car and the horsepower to work together. Even after changing engines, we continued to experience gremlins. It could be a fuel or electrical problem. We'll have to find it before the next race."

The next event for Larry Nance and the Team Marines Olds will be the 2nd annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, in Bristol, Tennessee . The event is scheduled for April 26-28 with professional qualifying starting on Friday.
