Dixon Qualifies Sixth at Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) -- Larry Dixon remained in the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday following the completion of qualifying at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Dixon clocked his best performance of qualifying when he drove his Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.577 seconds at 324.75 mph on his second of four qualifying efforts.

The two-time consecutive NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion suffered mechanical problems on both qualifying attempts on Saturday, losing traction on the first pass and then breaking a blower belt on the second attempt. The 33-time NHRA event winner drove his Miller-backed rail to the 4.577-second effort on Friday evening. Dixon's 324.75-mph speed was the top speed of qualifying in the Top Fuel category.

"I'm glad that we qualified in the top half of the field," said Dixon, who clocked the first 4.4-second run in NHRA history at H.R.P. in 1999. "We had trouble getting down the track on Saturday. On the first run, it spun the tires and on the second pass the car dropped a cylinder and threw the belt off. If we correct those problems, I feel good about our chances on Sunday."

Dixon, a two-time winner at Houston Raceway Park, will face Brady Kalivoda in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations which began at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.
