TOLIVER QUALIFIES 13TH AT THE SPRING NATIONALS IN HOUSTON
BAYTOWN, Texas (March 29, 2008) -- Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car driver Jerry Toliver qualified his Don Schumacher Racing entry in the No. 13 position today at the NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.
Making his 130th career start this weekend, Toliver posted a 4.961-second elapsed time at 314.09 mph during the final qualifying session to grab No. 13 for Sunday's eliminations. His other passes included an 11.129/78.58 (DNQ), a 5.012/305.56 (No. 12) and a 7.567/107.26 (No. 12) on what most drivers considered a tricky track this weekend.
"We struggled on Friday with the Rockstar Energy Drink Dodge," said Toliver. "The car shook on both laps and I pedaled the throttle on the second run and luckily we got in the show. That run would have been good enough to make the field, but we had to get through that shake spot.
"On the first run today it got through the shake and then it kind of blew the tires off. So (crew chief) Phil Shuler addressed those problems and we were able to improve with a solid run during the final session.
"By pedaling it Friday night and getting down the track and running a 5.01 it allowed Phil to get after it on that last run," continued Toliver. "Once we were safely in the field and it was our turn to run, then he could throw one away and actually try something on the track and see if we could improve, and obviously we did. When you have nothing to lose that's when you learn something, and that's why getting in at any time is extremely important. I think we've got a good race car for eliminations. It was good team work."
Toliver will square off against Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
