'Focus' operative word for Jason Line at Houston
BAYTOWN, Texas (March 28, 2006) -- There's a saying in drag racing that if you live by the tree, you die by the tree. For that reason, "Focus" is the operative word for Jason Line at this weekend's NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals.
Granted, it takes both horsepower and quick reaction time at the Christmas Tree (starting lights) to win races in the Pro Stock class in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Line, who finished third last year and second the year prior in NHRA POWERade points, is acknowledged to have the horsepower in his KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac GTO, but reaction time has been his downfall in the first three races this season.
At the season-opening race in Pomona, he lost on a holeshot. At Phoenix, Line red lighted, missing a perfect start by just one thousandth of a second. Finally, at the last event in Gainesville, the 2004 Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award (Rookie of the Year) winner fell victim to another holeshot loss.
For the uninitiated, a holeshot loss is when your opponent takes an advantage at the starting line and parlays that advantage into a win with a slower quarter-mile elapsed time.
"To say that we haven't been at the top of our game at the starting line would be an understatement," said Line on the eve of this weekend's event. "I've been hitting the practice tree a little bit but the most improvement will come from being a lot more focused at the start of each round of eliminations. I expect to be part of the mix all day on Sunday by turning things around at Houston."
Qualifying for Line and his KB Racing LLC/Summit Racing Equipment Pro Stock Pontiac GTO begins with two sessions on Friday, March 31 -- scheduled for 3 and 6 p.m. and concludes with two additional sessions on Saturday -- April 1 -- at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Line begins to focus on his quest for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals Pro Stock title on Sunday, April 2, with eliminations for all classes beginning at 11 a.m. All times are local Houston time (CT) and subject to change at anytime. Note: Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, April 2.
