GOODYEAR WINS FIVE TIMES IN NHRA RACE AT HOUSTON
HOUSTON, Texas (March 30, 2009) -- Records fell. The biggest names in drag racing won. Two women were among the winners.
It was the NHRA's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park and it happened on Goodyear tires.
The Goodyear-shod cars of Tony Schumacher, Ashley Force Hood and Ron Krisher won in the NHRA's Full Throttle Drag Racing Series for professionals. Duane Shields and Jacklyn Gebhardt-Still won their categories in Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series sportsman action. Those wins bring to 19 the total of Goodyear wins in national event competition this season.
Schumacher's win in Top Fuel was his first of the season. He beat Cory McClenathan in the final round. The 57th win in Schumacher's career moved him to second place in the 2009 standings, trailing only Antron Brown.
Force Hood also earned her first win of 2009. She beat Jack Beckman in the final after beating her father in the second round. Force Hood is now third in the Funny Car standings. Ron Capps and Del Worsham are ahead of her.
Krisher's victory over Jeg Coughlin capped a record-setting day in Pro Stock. Greg Anderson set the category speed record while losing in the first round, then watched as Mike Edwards became the first Pro Stock driver to top 212 mph with a run of 212.03 mph. But Krisher was the final round winner and he is now sixth in points. Jason Line leads the title chase.
Shields' victory in Top Alcohol Dragster kept Goodyear-equipped cars undefeated in the category in national events this season.
Gebhardt-Still's victory in Competition Eliminator was her first in national event competition.
