Collis No.6 on G2/Star Racing Suzuki at Houston
BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) -- Fred Collis, in his first appearance in 2004 aboard the G2/Star Racing Suzuki, qualified No. 6 at the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals.
In his first trip down the Houston Raceway Park quarter-mile on Friday, Collis recorded a pass of 7.125 seconds at 186.07 mph. That elapsed time held throughout qualifying.
"This bike is awesome. It has always been awesome," said Collis. "For me it was just getting back into a routine. George Bryce, George Smith and crew chief Ken Johnson made it easy. For me it was an easy transition from last year.
"The bike has plenty of power. I just had to jump on it and do my thing. We feel we have a little left for eliminations. We'll see what we can do tomorrow."
"We came out here to enjoy ourselves," Bryce said following qualifying. "So far it's working great. We qualified sixth in that shark-infested waters out there called the Pro Bike field. That shows that even though we're enjoying ourselves we're serious about racing. I was pleased to see Fred do that well that quickly, especially since he hasn't ridden competitively since last year."
Bryce's partner, George Smith added, "All of us here at G Squared and Star Racing are pleased to have Fred back. We want to continue our work developing horsepower so that he has the best bike on which to ride and race. This year is going to very interesting. We're testing the V-Twin starting next Wednesday. As I said it's going to be a very, very interesting and exciting year on the NHRA POWERade series.
"We're keeping our options open. A two bike team is definitely in our future," concluded Bryce.
When final eliminations get underway tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CDT) for the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals, Collis will be matched against a former Star Racing rider and three-time POWERade champion Angelle Savoie.
