Kalitta is low qualifier in Houston; becomes world's fastest Top Fueler.

Houston, April 12, 2003 -- On his way to tying the third quickest Top Fuel dragster run in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series history of 4.486 seconds, Doug Kalitta piloted his Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports dragster to the No. 1 qualifying position at the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals. This feat ties the NHRA record of five consecutive No. 1 qualifying positions to begin a season set in 1983 by Gary Beck.

The flame-adorned, bright red Mac Tools dragster can now add "world's fastest" to its list of accomplishments as well. During his quick charge to the top spot, Kalitta wowed the fans at Houston Raceway Park by posting the fastest quarter-mile speed ever, 333.91 mph, on the scoreboard.

"Our Mac Tools team is the best in the pits," Kalitta said. "Our dragster is a thrill to drive these days. We went some rounds in Las Vegas last weekend; hopefully, we will do the same here in Houston. Qualifying No. 1 is great and setting a new speed record is great, but we really want to win. That's what we are here to do, and we won't be satisfied until we do."

Kalitta will face Scott Weis in the first round of Top Fuel final eliminations set to begin at 11:00 AM (CST) Sunday.
