Doug Kalitta anxious for more NHRA final rounds and wins as Houston event looms
BAYTOWN, Texas (March 29, 2006) - At the previous NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event in Gainesville, Fla., Doug Kalitta, driver of the 7,000 horsepower Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, accomplished something that he and his team had not done for nine consecutive events since winning the Top Fuel title in Brainerd, Minn., last August - they reached the semifinals of final eliminations.
This weekend, March 31-April 2, Kalitta and his Mac Tools team will try to wrench themselves to one more round and get to the final round of the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Tex., just outside the Houston city limits sign. Kalitta, the 2003 Top Fuel champion of the event, made finals a familiarity last season by reaching seven title rounds en route to a career-high high five wins.
"I'm getting antsy to get back in the finals again," Kalitta said. "You can't win if you can't get to the finals. It's that simple.
"Gainesville was good for us. We needed to go some rounds and get some of the cobwebs knocked loose. Seriously, it was a good confidence boost. Hopefully we can build on that and keep improving in Houston."
Kalitta, a 41-year old resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., is a two-time Top Fuel championship points runner-up (2003-2004). He has 24 NHRA national event victories. He also holds the time slip for the quickest run in NHRA history, 4.420 sec., Chicago 1 - 2004. In 1998, Kalitta was the Auto Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award winner for NHRA rookie excellence, and he's a former USAC National Sprint Car Champion (1994).
The O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals begins Friday, March 31, for the Top Fuel class with two qualifying sessions at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (CT). Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations beginning at 11:00 a.m.
All times and dates subject to change.
The O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals is the 4th of 23 national events in the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
