Herbert breaks in new car with round win in Houston
HOUSTON -- The newest car in the Doug Herbert Racing stable has a few runs to its name and now the team is ready to tackle the rest of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season.
Herbert logged a first round victory Sunday during the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Herbert beat Bruce Litton in round one with a 4.571-second pass at 323.74 mph in the Snap-on Tools dragster before falling to Morgan Lucas in the second round. Lucas clocked a 4.552 pass at 321.88, slipping past Herbert's 4.580 at 323.43.
"It was a great race between Morgan and I," Herbert said. "It was real close if you check out the time slip but it looked even closer from the seat of the dragster."
Herbert is still pleased with the weekend's results, especially considering it was the first outing with a new car.
"We didn't win as many rounds as we would have liked this weekend, but this team will keep working hard and the round wins will come," Herbert said. "We have some work to do with the new car but that's to be expected. It was great to qualify in the No. 3 spot and good to get the first round victory."
Herbert recorded a 4.505 pass at 328.14 during the second qualifying session on Friday to earn the third position. The car smoked the tires on both qualifying attempts on Saturday.
"I think not making a full, clean run on Saturday hurt us today," Herbert said. "We made a great pass on Friday. We came close Saturday, but missed out just enough to throw us off today.
"I'm ready for the next race. This team is capable of making the Snap-on dragster get down the track in a hurry and we will."
The next NHRA POWERade race is in Las Vegas, April 15-17 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
