Herbert goes to Spring Nationals semis; moves to fifth in points.
BAYTOWN, Texas, April 13, 2003 - Making progress in drag racing is as important as winning rounds, and Doug Herbert did both during the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.
Herbert and his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster advanced to the semifinals for the first time in five 2003 NHRA POWERade Series races. And he defeated nemesis Larry Dixon in the quarterfinals en route to squaring off against eventual runner-up Cory McClenathan in the semis.
"I thought everything went very well this weekend," said Herbert. "Crew chief Ron Douglas, Jim Brissette (tuning consultant) and I are communicating better although our performance in the semis really didn't show it. We had problem with the clutch hydraulic system and the clutch didn't work properly. We had it set up to go down the racetrack."
That slowed Herbert to a 5.436-second, 197.74-mph run and permitted McClenathan to win with a 4.842. Herbert did his best, leaving the line quicker, .075 to .092.
After qualifying sixth (4.548 at 325.69 mph), Herbert knocked out Darrell Russell in the opening round with a 4.710 at 303.64 mph. He left first against Dixon, the series point leader, and coasted home with a 5.135 at 275.11 while Dixon's car lost traction.
"We aren't going to test Monday because our performance showed it's coming around," Herbert concluded.
Herbert moved into fifth place with 267 points, 33 behind McClenathan. Dixon leads with 459.
The Snap-on team's next outing is the Thunder Valley Nationals, April 25-27, at Bristol, Tenn.
