Herbert, Snap-on Team testing after Spring Nationals loss.

BAYTOWN, Texas, April 14, 2002 - It looked for a while like Johnny West, tuner/co-crew chief on Doug Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster, had unlocked the combination of consistency he'd been seeking all season.

Then came the opening round of the O'Reilly's Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park and Herbrert's upset loss to Mark Kinsella.

"Obviously we didn't fix the problem we thought we fixed," said a dejected Herbert. "We are going to stay here and test Monday. We have to figure it out. We know the problem won't solve itself.

"It's not like the car was on a great run and we smoked the tires. It looked like we were going to run a 4.75 (seconds) to a 4.78."

As it was, the Snap-on dragster's tires lost traction as it got closer to the finish line and slowed to a 4.897 at 263.73 mph while Kinsella got the win light with a 4.777 at 306.81.

Herbert had consistent runs on three of his four qualifying attempts, with his 4.702 at 312.42 mph putting him sixth overall. He added times of 4.733 and 4.774.

Herbert did advance one position in the standings, moving to eighth with 183 points.

He returns to competition in the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, Tenn., April 26-28.

Qualified: No. 6, 4.702 seconds at 312.42 mph

First round: Mark Kinsella, 4.777 at 306.81 def. Herbert

Pro Winners: Kenny Bernstein, Top Fuel; John Force , Funny Car; Mike Edwards, Pro Stock
