David Grubnic heads to Houston with winning and loyalty in mind
Houston, Tex., April 12, 2004 -- Now that the new car scent has started to fade in the cockpit of the jet black Kalitta Air Top Fuel dragster, driver "Aussie Dave" Grubnic finds himself in an unfamiliar but enviable position -- fourth place points position in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series' premier class.
In January, the veteran racer and native Australian was unveiled as the driver of the new third Kalitta Motorsports team dragster joining Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools dragster, and Scott Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools/Jesse James dragster. All three cars are under the watchful eye of team owner and crew chief Connie "the Bounty Hunter" Kalitta.
The Kalitta Motorsports racing triumvirate looks to rule their Top Fuel competitors this weekend at the NHRA O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, April 15-18.
Grubnic, who has two career runner-up finishes, has already shown drag racing fans conclusively why he was chosen to drive the primarily research and development Kalitta Air racecar. So far in the first four races of the 23-event NHRA tour in 2004, he has six elimination round wins, two semi-final appearances and two No.1 qualifying positions. Now that his chances for winning have sharply improved from years past, "Aussie Dave" is cautiously looking for the light at the end of the tunnel -- a win light. All the while, he remains humble and dedicated to his job description.
"To be honest, I am as happy as I have ever been in a racecar, but I would be lying if I told you that I don't want a win very badly," he said. "Driving this car for Connie and Jon (Oberhofer, co-crew chief) and all our guys is truly an honor. I know what my role is here and that's to help Doug and/or Scott get to the championship, but it would be great if that also meant getting our car a trophy or two along the way.
What I've heard, the weather is supposed to be pretty good for the races this weekend in Houston. Hopefully we will have a great showing from all three cars and get a win for Kalitta Motorsports. If I can help one of my teammates win, it is a win for all of us."
Top Fuel qualifying begins at Houston Raceway Park on Friday.
