CRUZ PEDREGON QUALIFIES 14TH
No. 14 Qualifier for Driver of Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car
Baytown, Texas (April 8, 2005) -- Cruz Pedregon, driver of the Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car, grabbed the 14th spot during Friday's NHRA Spring Nationals first two qualifying sessions at Houston Raceway Park.
Pedregon, winner of the Houston race in 1992 and 1998, fueled his car down the quarter mile with an elapsed time of 4.947 seconds at 294.18 mph.
It was quite an accomplishment considering Pedregon finished his run with the engine of the Advance Auto Parts car on fire. A faulty fuel management system reversed itself a second and a half into the run, depriving the engine of fifty percent of the fuel needed.
"I make about 200 runs a year and have made thousands during my entire career. Something like that has never happened," explained Pedregon. "It all started with a failure in the fuel system that starved the engine of fuel and created a domino effect. Thanks to all the safety measures we have in the car, it ended up being a small fire, but it could have been much worse.
"We had a very conservative first run and there was no indication of any problem with the car," added Pedregon. "We're very fortunate the car did not sustain a lot of damage considering what happened. All we need to do is replace the engine and be ready for tomorrow."
Even though Pedregon was not able to take advantage of tonight's cooler conditions, they are confident they will be successful during the second day of qualifying.
"Saturday's daytime conditions will be similar to elimination day. I know the car and my team will be ready for tomorrow's qualifying passes," concluded Pedregon.
