Baytown: Cruz Pedregon final summary



BAYTOWN, Texas -- Cruz Pedregon and his Advance Auto Parts Funny Car race team entered Sunday's Final Eliminations with the top spot at the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston and took full advantage of the ladder board match ups to reach the Finals.

Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Funny Car easily beat Todd Simpson with a 4.826 second pass at 309.56 mph. In the second round, Pedregon faced Bob Gilbertson. Pedregon started to lose traction at half track, but did a superb pedaling job to take the win light at 5.367 seconds.

In the semis Pedregon eliminated Jim Head with another consistent run of 4.875 seconds at 310.70 mph. to advance to the Finals and face Ron Capps.In the final round Pedregon was out of the gate first, but lost a cylinder at around half track to give the win to Capps.Capps ran a 4.868 to a trailing Pedregon at 5.025.

"This was a big weekend for the Advance Auto Parts Race Team" stated Pedregon. "We qualified number one and took full advantage.I can't say enough about how hard the whole team has worked over the last few weeks. Wayne (crew chief, Dupuy) gave me a great set up today, we just came up a little short.However, I feel really good about how far we have progressed and look forward to a repeat visit to the winner's circle in Las Vegas."

Wayne Dupuy added "Today we showed we are a championship caliber team that can give any team a run for their money.Cruz was terrific today nailing every light. The entire crew has worked so hard day in and day out and I really feel we have turned the corner."

This is the 33rd time Pedregon has qualified number one and that is the position he has qualified at the most.
