Houston, Tex., April 18, 2004 -- Final eliminations were completed today for the NHRA Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon came into today's eliminator qualified 10th and had Eric Medlen in the first round of eliminations. This was the first time for Pedregon to race Medlen in competition and 69th different driver to race in his career.

J an elapsed time of 4.904 seconds at 302.14 mph but Medlen left the starting line first and ran an elapsed time of 4.921 seconds at 302.41 mph to defeat Pedregon by about a half a foot.

"That was a heck of a drag race," stated Pedregon. "I overstaged on the prestage lights and that got my timing off a bit. There's a certain amount of "real estate" that NHRA allows us at the starting line and I usually deep-stage but with my timing off I was staged shallow. Medlen was deep staged which caused him to have the better reaction time. The numbers indicate that he beat me on a holeshot but we did the math and in reality I left on him but with him being staged deeper than me the numbers showed otherwise."

"I'm disappointed because I really thought I had won," added Pedregon. "But we have a good car and it continues to be consistent. We're going to go into Bristol knowing that the car is getting better and it's just a matter of time before we start winning rounds and races."

Pedregon remains 13th in the Funny Car points standings after five events.

The next event for the Quaker State Racing team is the NHRA Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn. on April 29 -- May 2.
