BAYTOWN, Texas (April 12, 2003) -- Following an uncharacteristic outing at last weekend's race in Las Vegas, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Darrell Gwynn Racing NY Yankees/Berryman Products Top Fuel Dragster, started slow on Friday but picked up the pace on Saturday at the 16th annual NHRA O'Reilly Nationals.

After Friday's action, McClenathan found himself in 20th position on the qualifying grid. In Saturday's first session, the Riverside, Calif., driver ran the second quickest time of session, a 4.619 seconds elapsed time. This moved him to 10th.

During the final qualifying session, the NY Yankees/Berryman Products dragster showed consistency when McClenathan recorded an elapsed time of 4.637 second at 317.19 mph. A small fire ensued around the finish line but did not cause damage and the Darrell Gwynn Racing team finished qualifying in 10th.

"We didn't start the way we had hoped but the good thing is that we keep up with the changing weather," said McClenathan. We has a little excitement after that last run. All it did was let the burst panel go and the engine got a little bit of fuel on it. It didn't hurt anything in the car. It ran a 61 (4.61 seconds) and 63 (4.63 seconds) today. That's a good tune up for Sunday, for race day. We're going to stick with that and try to go out there and knock them dead tomorrow. Don't count this Yankees/Berryman Products dragster out. "

McClenathan's first round opponent is Tony Schumacher in the Army dragster. Schumacher claimed the seventh qualifying position by virtue of a 4.580 second/323.04 mph pass. The pair have not met in 2003 and McClenathan hold a 9 to 7 advantage in wins for their career match ups.
