Cory Mac runner-up at Houston -- moves to fourth in points.
BAYTOWN, TEXAS (April 13, 2003) -- Rebounding from what he called a disappointing outing at Las Vegas, Cory McClenathan, from Riverside, Calif., advanced to the final round at the 16th annual NHRA O'Reilly Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.
McClenathan, driver of the Darrell Gwynn Racing/NY Yankees/Berryman Products Dragster, defeated Tony Schumacher, Clay Millican and Doug Herbert en route to a runner-up spot against Doug Kalitta.
In the final round McClenathan got away first at the light but at the end it was all Kalitta after the big Goodyears on Cory Mac's dragster lost traction. Kalitta ran a 4.580/323.43 to 6.832/123.27 for McClenathan. It was McClenathan's second final round of the 2003 season. He finished runner-up to Larry Dixon at the season-opening Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.
"This was a good rebound from Vegas. This morning I thought we had a good enough car to go a round or two. I feel fortunate to go as far as we did. To go to the finals is awesome," said McClenathan.
"The lack of preparation definitely got us behind the eight ball this afternoon. We weren't as ready as we should have been. Due to problems we didn't get to warn the car for the final round. That caught us a little off guard. But the good news is that those problems are easily corrected. The guys did work hard all day and I'm proud of what they accomplished for our team. We had some help from other team's crew members and we appreciate that very much. Now this Darrell Gwynn team is looking forward to the next race. Hopefully, everyone will see a lot of the NY Yankees/ Berryman Products dragster."
Today's showing moved McClenathan backed into the top five in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standing. He currently has 299 points, good for fourth. The top five in the Top Fuel point standings are: 1.) Larry Dixon with 459 points; 2.) Brandon Bernstein, 40 behind with 419 points; 3.) Doug Kalitta, 69 back with 390 points 4.) Cory McClenathan, 159 behind with 300 points; and 5.) Doug Herbert, 192 behind with 267 points.
The next race for the Darrell Gwynn Racing/NY Yankees/Berryman Products Dragster is the third annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals. The event unfolds at Bristol (TN) Dragway April 25-27.
