WHITELEY, BATEMAN LEAD QUALIFIERS INTO ELIMINATIONS AT BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY'S LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT
MORRISON, Colo. -- In the final rounds of qualifying a the Grease Monkey Thunder on the Mountain race, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Jim Whiteley remained the No. 1 qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster and Roger Bateman took over the top spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Eliminations in the eight Lucas Oil Series categories begin tomorrow morning.
Whiteley, a Grand Junction, Colo., resident, was No. 1 after Friday's initial round of qualifying and he did improve on Friday's run. Today, he made a 5.624-second pass at 255.00 mph which was just enough to keep him ahead of No. 2 qualifier Cody Perkins of Bluffdale, Utah. Perkins also improved on his opening-round qualifying run but his 5.628-second, 252.05 mph effort fell just short of the pole position. Because there are only seven Top Alcohol Dragsters in competition for the eight-car field this weekend, Whiteley will have a bye run in the first round of eliminations and Perkins will square off against Brent DuCray, another Grand Junction resident.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, veteran racer Bateman of Calgary, Alb., moved from the No. 2 spot to No. 1. He laid down a 5.949-second run at 241.20 mph to take the position from Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif. Gordon also improved on his initial qualifying run with a 5.970-second, 243.94 mph pass but it wasn't enough to cover Bateman. Bateman will face No. 8 qualifier, Paul Anderson of Erie, Colo., in the first round of eliminations.
Comp Eliminator Lou Ficco of Wheatridge, Colo., stayed in the No. 1 spot and Lakewood's Steve Holloway moved up to the second position. Morrison's Danny Gruninger qualified No. 4. In Super Stock, another Morrison resident, James Wheatland, kept his No. 1 qualifying spot and Darren Wall of Littleton is No. 2. Stock Eliminator racer Tony Hernandez of Denver stayed the best qualifier and Golden residents Scott and Brad Burton are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Wayne Glasgow, Casper, Wyo., is the top qualifier in Top Sportsman, Clif Bakx, Kleefield, Manit., is No. 1 in Top Dragster and Don Johnson, also of Casper, Wyo., is No. 1 in Sportsman Motorcycle.
Racing continues Sunday at Bandimere Speedway. Gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations start at 8:30 a.m.
Tickets for the Grease Monkey Thunder on the Mountain event are $22. Children 6 to 12 years old are $6 and kids 5 and under are admitted free.
