FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER CHAMP SANTOS RETURNS TO BAKERSFIELD TO DEFEND TITLE
Rick Santos, the 1997 and 1998 Federal-Mogul Dragster World champion and division seven champion, returns to Famoso Raceway at Bakersfield to defend last year's win.
Santos was the No. 1 qualifier covering the quarter-mile in 5.48 seconds. He defeated Shane Gay in the final round with an ET of 5.57-seconds and speed of 252.45 mph over Gay's ET of 5.62 and speed of 237.59 mph. His 5.48-second run in qualifying was only the second 5.4-second run of his career. Santos and his Oakwood Homes team has since made several runs in that range.
After his win at the Speedworld Motorplex in Wittman for the season opening division seven event, Santos leads the division seven point standings. Santos has one national win on his resume in 1999. He won the season opening race at Pomona, Calif.
Since joining with Jack O'Bannon Racing in April of 1996, Santos has 42 starts, 27 final round appearances, 18 wins (eight national and ten divisional) and was top qualifier 15 times. He has won 43 % of races entered since joining with O'Bannon. Santos has a total of 16 career national wins. Santos most recent win came in the Division Six race in Boise, Idaho on Sunday, April 15, 1999 when he defeated Melanie Troxel in the final round. He has three wins in four starts so far in 1999.
Santos has three wins at Famoso Raceway, including a win in 1998. At this race in 1994, Santos won in the dragster category and his brother David won in the super eliminator category.
"Famoso can be a very challenging track," said Santos. "It gets pretty hot in Bakersfield and the rubber sometimes gets balled up. A driver has to be careful. I like going there because it is pretty close to home. It is important that we do well there. A lot of guys have been performing well lately, and we really need to do our homework so we can be at the top of our game."
