DIXON DOMINATES; SWEEPS ATLANTA QUALIFYING
COMMERCE, Ga. hMay 15, 2010) -- Larry Dixon had the fastest pass in all four qualifying sessions in his Al-Anabi Racing/Toyota Top Fuel dragster and captured the pole position for Sunday's NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series' Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
In sweeping all four qualifying sessions, Dixon matches his own record as the only Top Fuel driver to earn all 12 qualifying bonus points at an event since NHRA instituted the bonus points prior to last September's race at Charlotte. Dixon previously set the record last fall at Memphis. With the 12 bonus points, plus the eight points he received as the top overall qualifier, Dixon extends his series points lead to 50 over second-place Cory McClenathan.
Including Dixon's pole position, Toyota-sponsored drivers have now captured the top spot in qualifying four times in the season's first eight races with Dixon also the fastest qualifier at Houston. Antron Brown also has been the fastest qualifier twice this year - at Gainesville and Las Vegas.
Brown led the remaining Toyota Top Fuel contingent with a sixth in the sweltering heat that pushed track temperatures above 120 degrees. Morgan Lucas was right behind Brown in seventh, while his teammate Shawn Langdon placed 13th. Dixon, Brown and Lucas all will have lane choice for the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
Dixon's Al-Anabi Racing teammate Del Worsham placed fifth as the top Toyota in Funny Car qualifying. The strong showing marked Worsham's sixth top-five qualifying effort in the season's first eight events.
Cruz Pedregon placed 10th in his Toyota Camry Solara.
