Commerce, Ga. - - The first session of professional qualifying gets underway today at the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway near Atlanta. Sam Tompkins, from Atlanta, owner and driver of the Tompkins Motorsports Chevy S-10 Pro Stock Truck, is reasonably optimistic as qualifying for the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals draws near.
"We saw some bright spots last week when we tested at Atlanta Dragway. We utilized our engine from last year during the test and ran well," said Tompkins. "We also gained much needed experience and runs with our new clutch system and are pleased with the results. We hurt our new Panella Motorsports engine at the race in Houston but have it back, completely repaired, and ready for qualifying here at Atlanta. I am reasonably optimistic about our chances at this weekend's event. We feel we will have a good opportunity to be part of the qualified field come Sunday's eliminations."
Today, Tompkins will have to divert some of his attention to a program that is rapidly changing young lives. As the founder and CEO of Another Way Out (AWO), an intervention and mentoring program that provides help and create alternatives for "at-risk" youth, Tompkins is making a difference in the community. Approximately, 200 AWO youth, representing 6 different schools, will attend today's qualifying. Tompkins will utilize his Chevy S-10 truck as a visual tool to convey his goal setting message during today's outing.
AWO is supported with monetary donations from United Way, corporate support from major companies including Advance Auto Parts, individual donations, and community fund raising. For their support of AWO, Tompkins carries the logos of United Way and Advance Auto Parts on his truck and trailer as his way of saying, "thank you."
Qualifying for the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals begins this afternoon for all professional classes with two sessions and concludes on Saturday with two additional sessions. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
